Unison was formed in 1993 so over 30 years ago, and saw the merger of 3 public health unisons - COHSE, NUPE and NALGO, transforming it into the largest trade union in Britain, with over 1.3 million members.
Unison Lothian Health branch is the 2nd largest health branch in the country and we represent members working in the health service plus the private and voluntary sectors. We currently have 90 Shop Stewards in the branch.
We are a proud campaigning branch and one of our most notable achievements was the introduction of the minimum wage - this started by Stewards in Lothian successfully fighting for and negotiating a minimum salary for all NHS staff and this was later rolled out across the rest of the NHS in Scotland. NHS staff in Scotland continue to receive a higher salary than the rest of the UK.
We also fought to scrap the pay cap which was introduced by the Pay Review Body and saw our members receive a 1% pay rise for many years.
Our latest achievement was to see 85% of Clinical Support Wokers move from a band 2 to a band 3.
Unison has a proud reputation as a campaigning union. We are one of the few member led trade unions and in Lothian this is something we are very proud of.
You, the members will always make the decisions on what you want us to fight for!
